In the glass

The nose is sweet, but the wine is very salty. There is a green grape quality with a slight touch of bubblegum, and a faint spritz as well. The colour is on the deeper side, and the acidity is very high. Nothing but Loire Chenin came to mind.

Producer

Jacky Blot, previously a wine broker, began Domaine de la Taille aux Loups when he acquired 8 hectares of old vines in Montlouis-sur-Loire in 1989.

Site

Clos de Venise lies in Vouvray, in the Loire. It is a clos of one hectare, entirely enclosed by walls and bordered by woods to the north and east, on a slope facing due south towards the Loire. The soil is clay with flint (argile à silex) over limestone bedrock, and the grape is Chenin Blanc.

Vinification

Across the domaine, practically all the wines are vinified in oak barriques that the domaine puts into service itself; the barrels are used for only 8 to 10 years, and about 10% of them are renewed each year. The domaine has made both dry and sweet wines from the same clos. The dry wine is a Sélection parcellaire from grapes picked on the second passage of the harvest, and a separate sweet version has also been released, with 80 to 100 g of residual sugar per litre.
