In the glass

It was sweet and very pale. The nose smelled Italian. I weighed several possibilities, but in the end it showed the typical character of Barbaresco. Barbaresco is sometimes said to be pale because it is harvested early.

Producer

Albino Rocca is a family winery, now in its fourth generation of growing grapes.

Site

The Montersino plot lies at the southern end of the Barbaresco production zone in Piemonte, Italy, in San Rocco Seno d'Elvio, which belongs to the city of Alba. It sits higher than the village of Barbaresco and covers about half a hectare.

Vinification

The wine is 100% Nebbiolo, made from Montersino fruit alone. It is aged for about 20 months in a single 20-hectolitre large barrel (botte) made of Austrian and German oak, then spends a few months in bottle.
